BELMONT PARK, N.Y. -- I'll Have Another's shot at the Triple Crown comes to an abrupt halt.

The colt was scratched from the 144th running of the Belmont Stakes because of a swollen left tendon.

The 3-year-old had a light workout Friday morning, but after a scan, the tendon seemed tender so he's being pulled from the race.

"Just a freakish thing," said trainer Doug O'Neill. "He has been showing a little bit of...you know, he has been a little quiet the last few days of galloping, but his legs have been great. Yesterday he galloped great, but in the afternoon we noticed some loss of definition in his left front leg."

O'Neill said the decision to scratch the colt was unanimous among the team.

I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and was the 4-5 favorite to win the Belmont. There hasn't been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
