ALBANY, N.Y. -- An Albany man accused of creating a fake identity to steal money was found guilty in Albany County Court Monday. Carlton Phoenix, 51, was convicted of several charges, including grand larceny and criminal contempt.

Late last year, Phoenix convinced someone to loan him $6,000 with the promise of a pending $380,000 grant from the Veteran's Administration. District Attorney David Soares said Phoenix even went as far as creating fake FedEx packing slips, faxes, and a fictitious Veteran’s Affairs representative to keep things going.

Phoenix told the victim he planned to buy two properties with the money.

He faces three and a half to seven years in state prison when he's sentenced next month.
