A multi-million dollar transportation project is underway to support nanotech school growth. Our Erin Vannella has more.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Highway improvements to ease congestion and support growth at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering are underway.

The $18 million project will move Washington Avenue Extension north to parallel I-90 and a roundabout will be installed at the County Road 156 and Fuller Road intersection.

A fly over bridge will also be built to carry through traffic, thus removing an estimated 20,000 cars daily from that busy intersection.

"With 90 and the entrance to the Thruway and Washington Avenue right there, there was clearly a need when we took a look at the traffic impacts. And what will be happening in the future as the nanotech center continues to grow. And we thought this was the right time to make those investments," said Joan McDonald, NYSDOT Commissioner.

New sidewalks and a ten foot bike lane will accommodate walkers and bikers to connect them to existing trails, along with new bus stops along the route.
In the meantime, the DOT says most of the work will be done without impacting traffic too badly and should be done by late fall.
