WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- Price Chopper is confirming that it's interested in opening a new supermarket at the site of the former St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet.

Nigro Companies is hoping to have the area rezoned in order to redevelop it. That would mean the old church, rectory and school would have to be demolished.

The new Price Chopper would replace the store currently open on Second Avenue in Watervliet, which the chain says is too small and outdated.

While advocates of the redevelopment project say it could bring jobs and an economic boost to the city, opponents say it would be a shame to lose the rich history of the church.

Price Chopper says its executives will be participating in upcoming public meetings in order to get feedback from its possible new neighbors.
