Two police officers are still recovering in a Brooklyn hospital, while two others have been released. As YNN'S Bree Driscoll explains, they were all shot during a dramatic gun fight.

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. -- Four NYPD officers miraculously alive after a close range shoot out, their attacker just 10 feet away from them.

Mayor Bloomberg said, “Here we were very lucky, but it could have been a great tragedy."

Police said it all start around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when they were called to 3301 Nostrand Ave. That is where they said Nakwon Foxworth, 33, had been menacing some movers with a gun. Once police arrived they found Foxworth holding his pregnant girlfriend and 4-month-old baby hostage. Then around 12:30 Sunday morning...

"The woman suddenly open door and fled the apartment with the baby in her arms,” said Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

As she fled she left the door open behind her. That is when Foxworth fired 12 times from his 9mm Browning semi-automatic weapon hitting the four officers. Detective Michael Keenan was shot in the calf. Detective Kenneth Ayala was shot in the thigh and foot. Officer Matthew Granahan was hit in the calf and Captain Al Pazanno's face was grazed by a bullet.

Kelly said, "Although hit, detective Ayala and officer Granahan returned fire, striking Foxworth in the abdomen."

Foxworth was apprehended and brought to Kings County Hospital in critical but stable condition.

Once inside the apartment police found a barrage of illegal weapons including a sawed off military assault rifle with a scope that had been stolen and a defaced 22 caliber revolver that was fully loaded.

Kelly said this was not Foxworth's first run in with the law. He has spent more than a third of his life in prison on various charges including attempted murder and robbery. He was most recently release in 2010. Both Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly stressed how this latest incident is just another example of why we need stricter gun control laws.
Bloomberg said, “We will continue to do everything that we can to take illegal weapons off our streets. But until congress wakes up and finds some courage to stand up to the gun lobby illegal guns will continue to end up in the hands of dangerous people. Like tonight's shooter.”

Mayor Bloomberg said this is the 8th police shooting so far this year. Commissioner Kelly said that number is up significantly from last year.
