Thousands of dollars worth of drugs confiscated in what residents describe as wholesome communities. YNN's Elaina Athans has more on the drug sting police says is one for the books.
WOODBURY, N.Y. -- Hard drugs are seized from seemingly harmless homes in upscale neighborhoods.
"Oxycontin, heroins and cocaine," said Woodbury Polcie Investigator Erick Johnson.
Woodbury Police just wrapped up a year-and-a-half long investigation and two dozen people were arrested. Police says those charged in the drug sting were either using or selling in places like Monroe, Woodbury and Central Valley.
"Believe it or not, even though it’s a mid to upper class community, we do have an extremely large drug problem and we want to keep the community safe," said Johnson.
People who live and work in the area they consider safe were surprised by what happened.
"To have 24 busted like that is something," said Tony from Monroe.
"It’s a shame that people, a small batch of people,e got to ruin it," said Monrow business owner Franz Constancio.
The drugs had a street value of more than $20,000. Police are calling this investigation a major bust for the area.
"This was a very successful investigation. I don’t think we’ve had anything this large in Woodbury in the last 30 years," said Johnson.
Police says the arrests will ultimately help the greater community, saying drug abusers can turn to other crimes, like stealing, to pay for the next fix.
"That usually follows. That‘s the pattern. When people don’t have the money to purchase their drugs, there’s going to go to illegal activities, whether it be boosting down at the Woodbury Common or burglaries in the local residences," said Johnson.
