ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A man carrying an umbrella that was mistaken for a rifle led to a temporary alert at the Rochester Institute of Technology's campus.

The school put out word for people in one dormitory to barricade themselves inside because of a report that a man was seen carrying a rifle. Other people were told to stay indoors at about 8:30 a.m.

John Helfer, a spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff's department, says the man was carrying an umbrella.
