FULTON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Residents of the Mayfield and Northville school districts will vote on September 18th on whether or not to merge their two school districts.
The two school boards voted unanimously on Thursday to put proposal before voters in a non-binding, advisory referendum.
Both schools have been facing significant budget issues and predict that if they remain separate, they will face more staff layoffs and eliminations of non-mandated programs.
Northville Superintendent Kathy Dougherty said, “We have to accept that if we do not merge, the school districts will not just continue the way they are. Neither district can afford to sustain its programs on its own."
Mayfield Superintendent Paul Williamsen said, “If residents wish a viable school system to continue operation in the area, then the districts must change.”
It is estimated that if the two schools merge, they would receive $19 million in state aid over the first 14 years of operation.
