AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- An 18-year-old Mayfield woman and her boyfriend were arrested in connection with a counterfeit scam at a Target store in the town of Amsterdam. The boyfriend works at the Target location.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the Secret Service last week regarding fake $100 bills that were being used at that Target store. Police said it was discovered after reviewing surveillance video from last month that Carley Goguen used 13 counterfeit $100 bills as payment for more than $1,200 worth of merchandise while her boyfriend Ethan Whitman was the cashier.

About an hour later, Goguen returned to the store to return one of the items and was given back $800 in real money.

Both are facing criminal possession of a forged instrument charges. Goguen was also charged with grand larceny. They're both scheduled to appear again in court next Tuesday.
