MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- It looks like a charter school will not be coming to Middletown any time soon.
Officials with Liberty Charter School are withdrawing their application, but say they plan to reapply later on. The charter school would have been the first of its kind in the area.
Public hearings were held to give the public a chance to weigh in on the idea. Those in support of bringing a charter school to Middletown say it would give the parents a choice.
Critics say it would hinder the Middletown City School District and the district says it would take taxpayer money away from the public school.
District officials say for every 74 students who would attend the charter school, the district would be forced to cut more than a million dollars in programs and staff.
The next time the Liberty Charter School Board of Trustees can apply is May. A letter of intent would have to be submitted by May 25th and a complete proposal would be due in July.
