TROY, N.Y. -- Volunteers hit the dirt in Troy to help Capital District Community Gardens double its year-round harvest.
A second unheated greenhouse, called a "high tunnel" went up on the 8th Street Produce Project Farm. Students from area colleges pitched in for Saturday's expansion as the organization looks ahead to helping more at-risk young people.
Amy Klein, the Capital District Gardens Executive Director said, “Our teenagers grow here year-round and they sell the produce to local markets and to local restaurants. So they're not only learning agricultural skills, but they're learning marketing sales skills and basic work skills."
Klein said this project will also add outdoor space for more crops during the growing season.
