PLATTEKILL, N.Y. -- The brush fire season is heating up. This years mild winter paired with the dry terrain could make for an intense brush fire season.
“As dry as it is right now they could spread real quick," said Plattekill Fire Chief, Ralph Davis.
Firefighters across the region have already rushed to the scene of dozens of fires. In Plattekill firefighters battled two back to back brush fires on Saturday. One of which burned down a barn and the other leaving minor damages to a nearby trailer.
“We got here part of the trailer was burning a little bit and we lost about 80 yards in the back,” Davis said.
Firefighters say brush fires can spark and spread easily from bon and barrel fires to a cigarette bud.
"It’s very dry out this time of year you throw a cigarette bud out it will start a fire in minutes," David said.
The say the best way to prevent brush fires is not to burn at all. A state wide burn ban is in effect from now until May.
