ALBANY, N.Y. -- Mayors throughout the Capital Region showed their support for Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposal to limit wage increases.

Right now, panels can give public workers a raise if a local government is considered to be under “fiscal distress.” Leaders say Cuomo's proposal would protect property tax payers from state-mandated police and fire contracts.

"Public safety is always our number one priority as mayors. I can speak for mayors from Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Utica. I can't speak highly enough about our outstanding police and firefighters and the job they do to protect our community. But we also have to be mindful of our community’s ability to pay," Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings said.

Those contracts are set to expire on July 1st. Cuomo’s plan would cap the increases at two percent.
