ALBANY, N.Y. – Starting today, the Albany Public Library is offering free tax service right up until the filing deadline. People making less than $51,000 can stop at the Albany Public Library on select days through April 13.

Volunteer Tax Preparer, Sarah Geta says, "There’s a lot of complicated things you have to do to file your taxes, but the computer helps us out a lot, and we have a lot of people shadowing us, making sure we're doing the right thing, a lot of experienced tax people."

One client for this free income tax service, Brian Alvarado says, "I really don't know much at all about filing my taxes, so I come here and these lovely people help!"

And it might be a good idea even if you know how to do your own taxes. Each year, the program typically files more than 1,200 returns; and gets more than $1.5 million back in refunds for their clients.

Walk-in services will be available at the main branch on Washington Avenue on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Anyone wanting to make an appointment can do so on Wednesdays.

Appointments can also be made at the branch on Henry Johnson Boulevard on Mondays and Fridays. However, that option will only be available through February 25.
