QUEENSBURY, N.Y. -- Already in a tough year for budgeting, administrators at the Warren and Washington County Jails are now tasked with making up several hundred thousand dollars a year in lost revenue.

For the past several years, each jail had been housing between 15 and 20 inmates a day from Dutchess County, where a shortage of jail beds existed. Late last year, local Sheriff's were told those inmates would be returning closer to home at the start of 2013. At a rate of roughly $80 per day, per inmate, the local jails were making about $400,000 a year.

The loss of revenue is something Warren County Sheriff Bud York says he saw coming.

"Each county is tasked by the Corrections Commission to have its own jail," he said. Every county is supposed to have space for their own people, so as time goes on, each county is building their own space, and that's going to take away from the revenue from the other counties."

York said the county began housing federal inmates a few months ago, however, because there are so few of them, the revenue stream isn't nearly as large.
