TROY, N.Y. -- Troy's Mayor Lou Rosamilia has selected Anthony Magnetto for the newly created police commissioner position.

The position has been a controversial one in the city. The City Council, which is dominated by Democrats, approved the $30,000 a year position late last year.

Current Police Chief John Tedesco and some council republicans were critical of the move, calling it an effort to get around Tedesco's authority and force him out.

If approved by the city council, Magnetto would oversee all operations of the police department and report directly to the mayor.

Rosamilia says he chose Magnetto because he's bringing decades of experience to the job.

"I'm not politically compliant at all and the mayor knows this. I've never been enrolled in a political party. I'm not an independent or a conservative or whatever. I'm a professional police officer," Magnetto said.

"By bringing on a man of 36 years experience and having the knowledge and expertise that he brings to the table is going to benefit all of the residents of Troy,” Rosamilia said.

Chief Tedesco says now is not an appropriate time for him to comment.

If Magnetto is approved by the council, he'll be sworn in on February 7th.
