TROY, N.Y. -- A new provision could change the way that police enforce gun possession.

Part of the new bill would make it a misdemeanor to make available, sell, exchange, give or dispose of a community gun that aids a person in committing a crime.

Troy Police Chief John Tedesco says that provision is another tool that they can use to get guns off the streets.

"I think it's a big plus for any community," he said. "Stronger penalties, I think was really called for. If any city across the nation is going to work on violence, it's really a matter of arresting people and they're going to have to do some time, get them off the streets."

Chief Tedesco also says police welcome anything that will help them keep Troy safe.
