AVERILL PARK, N.Y. -- An Averill Park teen spent his first day at school with his new Diabetic Alert dog to help monitor his health.

Isaiah Thomas, 14, just received Max, a service dog, to help him monitor his sugar levels. Max can smell high and low blood sugars of diabetics and can alert Isaiah by pawing at him and wining if his sugars fluctuate out of the normal range.

Max comes from the National Institute of Diabetic Alert Dogs. They train dogs anywhere from four and six months using the same scent training that FBI drug dogs go through.

Mom Lynda Martin said, "It's just amazing. It's been definitely a wonderful journey, and we're just so happy that Max is finally here."

Isaiah will be able to bring Max wherever he goes.
