GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- Thursday was Heritage Day at Westmere Elementary School in Guilderland. Students studied different parts of the world to learn more about their heritage.

After five weeks of studying where their family originally came from, students put together different stations to share what they learned with classmates. Their families were also invited to attend.

Teachers say the students learned all about the history and culture of different countries, while at the same time learning about themselves and what the holidays and traditions they celebrate really mean.

"We get to celebrate where we all come from, and we really get to see what a melting pot we have in this country, and celebrate our differences and our similarities," said Melissa DeLuca, fifth grade teacher at Westmere Elementary.

Students say the research was fun because a lot of it came from talking with their relatives. They were also able to bring in items from their respective countries to share.
