TROY, N.Y. -- Some middle school girls learned more about STEM careers Friday at the fifth annual girls summit. About 100 seventh grade girls from the Greater Amsterdam and Ballston Spa school districts spent the day interacting with educators and professionals from science, technology, math and engineering fields.

There were a number of workshops on topics ranging from forensic science to wireless technology.

Kids attending the event even got to see a familiar face, our own Julie Chapman.

Careers in STEM fields are typically more unpopular among young females. But after Friday's event, some may reconsider.

"It was amazing. It was such a good idea. I learned so much about math and science that I never thought I could use, but today, they proved me wrong and I could actually use when I was older,” said Ballston Spa seventh grader Sarah Pritchard.

"Because I didn't really like science that much, but when I came here, I liked it much more because of the CSI work and energies," Ballston Spa seventh grader Grace Thompson said.

Friday's event was part of the Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds initiative.
