Elderly man killed in one car crash

COLUMBIA COUNTY, N.Y. -- An elderly man was killed after Columbia County Sheriff's deputies say he drove off of the road and into trees. It happened around 7 a.m. Friday on State Route 9, near the intersection with Oakleaf Drive in the Town of Stuyvesant.

Deputies say they found Kenneth Oelkers, 87, of Kinderhook at the scene.

According to deputies, Oelkers had been traveling northbound on Route 9 and went off of the road. Deputies say there were no other vehicles involved and Oelkers was wearing his seatbelt.

The crash is under investigation and investigators are looking into the possibility that a medical problem may have been a contributing factor.
