KINGSTON, N.Y. -- In celebration of the city's Dutch heritage, Kingston held its second Sinterklaas event Saturday.

The celebration marks the official start to the holiday season and includes many events every Saturday for the next few weekends. As part of the event, children in the community make crowns and branches to symbolize their "royal status" on this special day.

In a multi-county tradition, as part of the Sinterklaas parade, kids send Sinterklaas across the Hudson River, where the celebration picks up in Rhinebeck.

Organizers say the parade is something that the whole community takes part in.

“I think this a parade that has no spectators, I think everyone should be in the parade. Grab a flag and just escort Sinterklaas down the hill,” said Nancy Donskoj, co-chair of the Sinterklaas Committee.

The "bi-coastal" event continues through the evening with performances from local entertainers, food tasting and more.
