Poughkeepsie police remind residents to lock their cars

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Poughkeepsie police are reminding residents to keep their cars locked. That's after an uptick in overnight car thefts around the area.

According to police, there's been a large spike since the month of September. They're warning people that although your car windows may not be broken, that doesn't mean the car hasn't been looked through.

Suspects will rummage through unlocked cars to see if there's anything worth taking. The most commonly stolen items are cash, GPS units, iPods and MP3 players.

Police say residents should call them if they see people near cars with flashlights at night.
