CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- "You saved an extraordinary number of lives in communities far away from your own. You know what, because of you, New Yorkers right now who have loved ones alive, might not be alive if you have not gone down there. Let’s have a round of applause," Senator Charles Schumer said.

Schumer recognized three Capital District fire departments who responded to victims on Long Island during Superstorm Sandy. The senator presented a flag to each fire chief from East Greenbush, Melrose and Poestenkill in appreciation for their service. The flags were recently flown over the U.S. Capitol.

The crews worked around the clock, going above and beyond the call of duty.
