TROY, N.Y. -- The first witnesses take the stand today in the retrial of Rensselaer County Elections Commissioner Ed McDonough.

McDonough is charged with forging ballots to secure a Democratic win in the 2009 Troy City Council elections. His attorney says McDonough did not know about the scheme.

Last week, special prosecutor Trey Smith called McDonough a crooked public official. Among his key witnesses expected to testify are a number of Troy officials who have already pleaded guilty to their involvement in the scheme.

McDonough was tried with former Troy city councilman Michael LoPorto earlier this year, but a mistrial was declared. LoPorto was later acquitted of the charges against him.
