SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office's gun buyback program continued Saturday. The event was held at the Carver Community Center on Craig Street in Schenectady.

Officials say the idea is to offer families a chance to benefit from the safe removal and destruction of unwanted or illegal weapons.

"This is our sixth gun buyback program that we've participated in. So far, we're very pleased with the turnout and the participation from the residents of the county," said Sheriff Dominic Dagostino. "To this point, we've given out $6,100 in gift cards for handguns and $3,500 in gift cards for long gun, so we're very pleased with the progress of this initiative."

Sheriff Dagostino says the county will plan similar programs for the future.
