AVERILL PARK, N.Y. -- State Police are investigating a case of alleged misconduct by a teacher's aide at Algonquin Middle School.

School officials have placed Jeffrey Spenard on leave while they investigate alleged inappropriate communication with students. Spenard has been working at the school for ten years, and also serves as the boy's modified baseball coach.

The district is conducting an investigation, speaking with students, parents and staff.

State Police are conducting their own investigation as well, but the school district says this is currently a personnel matter, and no criminal charges have been filed.

"We always act, primarily, in the safety of students. We acted first, as soon as the allegations were brought to us, we acted immediately. To ensure this person isn't working with students, until it is resolved. We always act first with the interest of students in mind,” said Dr. James Hoffman, Averill Park Central Schools.

No word from either State Police or the school district on the nature of that alleged inappropriate communication

The school has sent a letter home to students, and posted the information on their website. Superintendent Hoffman encourages any parents with concerns to call the school.
