ALBANY, N.Y. -- Veterans are honored for their service and sacrifice at the 57th annual Albany Veterans Day Parade.

The parade kicked off Monday morning to a large crowd in downtown Albany. Veterans Day was actually Sunday but observed on Monday.

The parade is put on by the City of Albany's Joint Veterans Committee. People who came out for this say it's nice to see such a great turnout.

Vietnam veteran Bob Stapf said, "We need to support our troops. Our troops support our country, and they support our way of life. We need to remember that nothing's free. And we all need to give something."

Charleston resident Don Greene said, "I had relatives that served our country, and we're seeing a lot of people dying in the wars now. It's a difficult thing. I'm glad I didn't have to go, but I'm honored that people I know served our country."

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, New York State has about 950,000 vets who've served from World War II onward. Veterans Day was first celebrated on November 11, 1919.
