CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Travers Day may be the most anticipated horse race in the Capital Region, but luckily, there's a whole week’s worth of activities to get you in the track spirit. Celebrating 1864, the first year of the Travers Day Race, dozens of Capital Region restaurants will offer three course meals for the price of $18.64.
The Permanently Disabled Jockey's Fund Dinner takes place Monday at the Broadway Stadium Cafe. Food will be prepared by some of your favorite jockeys! And Mary Lou Whitney will be honored by Former Governor Mario Cuomo and the Mental Health Foundation for being a long time supporter.
Once you've had a meal at the Travers Day price, or tried some food prepared by well known jockeys, you're ready for the annual Mid-Summer Derby. The oldest major stakes race in the country for three-year-olds. People come from all over to check out Travers Day fun. Who will win the coveted Man O' War cup and the $1,000,000 purse? If you can't make it, check out the Spa Spot.
Back in Albany, you're probably used to the construction going on around U-Albany. Well, this fall, returning students will be able to enjoy some of the new construction on campus as well. The newly finished, environmentally friendly Liberty Terrace dorm will be shown off to the public Monday. The 500 bed apartment complex will be right behind the freshman quad. The buildings will have green roofing and energy efficient windows.
A hottely debated topic around the Capital Region is the proposed cabaret law by the city council, which would require all live music venues to stop at 2 a.m. on weekends and midnight on weekdays. Several bar and night club owners plan to hold a Save our Jobs and Bars Rally Wednesday, complete with a march to City Hall. Some city council members said they were unaware the proposed law, which requires special licensing for bars and venues with live music, had any sort of time or age restrictions. The rally starts at 4:30 p.m. at Townsend Park.
The week-long Rotterdam boys and girls club remodel will be unveiled Friday. After decades of wear and tear local residents worked together to secure the $150,000 needed to fix the roof, exterior, and game room.
Following seasonably warm and even stormy weather at times, it'll feel more like you're heading back to school, weather wise this week. Our weather center says we will feel some cool nights and comfortable days that remind us of early September. Of course, summer's not over yet, so we'll bounce back to that 80 degree weather and even some humidity later in the week. Don't forget to tune into weather on the 9's for updates!
