NEW YORK -- The estimated $14 toll for the replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge may be reduced if the state can build a less expensive structure. The fare on the Tappan Zee Bridge now is just $5.

Friday morning, Governor Cuomo sent a letter to the state Thruway Authority regarding the bridge. Cuomo said the authority should work with members of Congress to maximize federal funding for the bridge, expand discount programs for residents of Westchester and Rockland counties, and seek financial instruments that would lower the cost of credit and borrowing.

Cuomo, who also appeared Friday morning on Fred Dicker’s Talk 1300 show, explained why replacing the old bridge isn't an option.

He said, "A new bridge is just about the same cost as preparing the old bridge, believe it or not. The bridge needs such structural work, it is basically the same in cost, new verses fix the old. So, the new bridge makes sense."

In the letter, Cuomo also said he is pleased with the Final Environmental Impact Statement and the Thruways' design specifications.
