SOUTHERN TIER -- Crews from the National Weather Service will be in the Southern Tier today to look at storm damage and determine if a tornado touched down on Sunday.

The National Weather Service received reports at around 6 p.m. Sunday of a possible tornado touching down about a mile away from the Sidney Airport. There were four witnesses, including a pilot at the airport, who sent YNN this video that he took moments after it appeared to have touched down.

Local crews will also be out Monday morning continuing with clean-up efforts.

Sidney's fire chief was out surveying the damage with crews Sunday night. He says the area hit the hardest lies between County Road 4 and I-88, a section of land where there are no houses. County Road 4 has been shut down at both ends due to downed trees and power lines.

The chief says anyone who does not live along the road should stay away.

"Trees that are hanging in other trees, I call them widow-makers, because a good wind will take them and blow them down and you don’t know what's going to happen. Stay out of the area until DPW gets it open back up. I know everyone wants to sightsee, but give the guys a chance to clean the roads up and make it safe for everybody," said Gregory Peck, Sidney Fire Chief.

Chief Peck estimates that storm damage could stretch over a mile.
