A community is in shock on Sunday after Saratoga County Sheriff's Deputies said a 14-year-old girl was hit and killed by a drunk driver as she walked along the road with a friend. It happened on West Milton Road on Saturday night.

MILTON, N.Y. -- Neighbors are devastated over the sudden death of Kari Liedel, 14. Liedel was walking down West Milton Road with a friend, when police said the vehicle of Gavin Staulters, 21, was driving and hit a mailbox before hitting Liedel from behind.

The Saratoga Sheriff's Office said Liedel was dead when deputies arrived. Staulters, who is a member of the U.S. Air Force, was charged with driving while intoxicated and taken to the county jail.

Neighbors said this isn't the first accident to happen on this road involving pedestrians. They hope that this will serve as a wake up call to drivers in the area.
