JCC swimming pool reopens

A Niskayuna swimming pool re-opens nearly one week after vandals trashed it, leaving shards of glass in the water and $30,000 worth of damage. As our Brandon Walker reports, leaders at the Jewish Community Center say they are ready to put this behind them.

NISKAYUNA, N.Y.-- Days ago the Jewish Community Center's swimming pool was empty, the water was drained and was unfit for swimming.

"We were very surprised to see the glass at the bottom of the pool obviously. We had some minor incidents the week prior, but this was some extreme vandalism," said Stephen Cohen, JCC Board of Directors.

That incident happened on Monday. Niskayuna Police said someone broke a blue glass globe, leaving behind shards of glass both on the deck and in the water. The water, all 365,000 gallons of it, had to be pumped out and replaced. At this time, Niskayuna Police do not have any suspects.

"We made sure that there was no debris on the bottom. And starting on Wednesday we had tanker trucks coming in around the clock and it took about 40 trucks to fill the pool," said Danielle Druzynski, JCC Lead Lifeguard.

"It's going to be a nice weekend," said Cohen. "A lot of families will come enjoy the pool."

With a final inspection, the pool is open again just in time for the holiday. The pool re-opened Saturday and will be open all weekend until 7:00 p.m.
