NEW YORK STATE -- In the 18th Congressional District, Sean Patrick Maloney will take on Republican Congresswoman Nan Hayworth this fall.

Maloney defeated four other candidates in the democratic primary, including Richard Becker, Duane Jackson, Matthew Alexander and Thomas Wilson.

The democratic candidate was one of President Bill Clinton's advisors when he was in the White House and served as first deputy secretary to both Governor Spitzer and Paterson.

Maloney says Tuesday's vote shows democrats have spoken loud and clear about what they want.

"We are back, we are strong, we've had enough. We are ready to work and we are going to take back Congress for people who work, who don't have work, who want to work. That's what we're starting tonight," Maloney said.

Maloney was a strong proponent of marriage equality in New York State.
