NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Dozens of local veterans will finally see the World War II memorial. After overcoming financial hurdles, the group flew out of Stewart International Airport en route to Washington, D.C. on Saturday morning.

The trip is organized by Honor Flight, an organization that is devoted to helping veterans visit war memorials nationwide. Unveiled just eight years ago, many veterans have not had the opportunity to see the memorial.

According to Honor Flight, about 900 World War II veterans die each day. That is why it is important to Walden Mayor Brian Maher to help raise money. He said it is the least he can do.

"It's been amazing, and speaking with the World War II vets, they are on cloud nine. Some of them could barely sleep. To be able to be a part of that is a really special thing," said Maher.

The vets will also make a stop at Arlington National Cemetery.
