ALBANY, N.Y. -- Families affected by addiction will team with treatment experts today, calling on lawmakers to pass the ISTOP Prescription Tracking legislation. ISTOP, or "Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing," would create a real-time online database and require doctors and pharmacists to report and track controlled substances.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who proposed the bill, says it would help avoid over-prescribing, help shut down prescription drug trafficking, and identify and treat patients who seek to abuse prescription drugs.

The group speaking today says that while several lawmakers have expressed support for the bill, action needs to be taken before the end of the legislative session.
