TROY, N.Y. -- After risking a jump from 30 feet, one lucky young man survived a dangerous landing at Poestenkill Gorge in Troy.

Much like these teens are trying here, there's a spot in the gorge where you can jump off the cliff into a deeper water hole. Well Thursday afternoon, one young man before them tried and missed, landing on the rocks on his feet, then backwards on his hands. He broke many bones in his arms and legs.

Police say they're not supposed to be down there and not supposed to be in the water, but many still take the 200 foot climb up the falls as a challenge and then struggle to make a safe descent.

"Most people who attempt it apparently make it ‘cause we don't get calls all the time, but we do get people frequently trapped on the side of the gorge or hurt down inside the gorge where they've fallen on rocks or tripped and sprained or twisted an ankle. Most serious of which, we've had some fatalities where people have fallen off the side of the gorge while trying to climb," Troy Fire Department Battalion Chief Dave Paul said.

Police can fine and arrest the risk-takers. All are welcomed to take in the view. Just don't get wet.
