COLONIE, N.Y. -- The Colonie Police Department honored their own at the Annual Awards Ceremony at the Public Safety Center.

Awards were presented to officers and civilians and special awards were given to the Police Officer, Public Safety Communicator and Explorer of the Year.

Police Chief Steven Heider said his officers do good all year round, but special events like this one are important to highlight the work of special officers that would otherwise go unnoticed.

"It's special for our officers. They do a lot of good work all year, every one of our officers do. But there are those events that rise about the occasional call or call for service and they just need recognition. And this is what this event is all about. It's recognizing those special officers and those special events," Heider said.

This year, the Medal of Valor was awarded to Sergeant Daniel Belles for heroism under gunfire last July and to Patrolman Donald Wilkins who was killed in the line of duty in 1956.
