DUANESBURG, N.Y. -- A two-car crash at the intersection of Route 20 and 30 in the Town of Duanesburg has claimed the life of an Esperance woman.

State Police said James Barton, 78, of Esperance was heading westbound on Route 20 and attempted to make a left turn on Route 30 south. A second vehicle, driven by Cheryl Lennox, 63, of Delanson, was heading eastbound on Route 20 and hit Barton's vehicle in the intersection.

Barton's wife, Carol, 78, who was a passenger in the car, died at the scene.

Officials said this intersection isn't known to be a dangerous one.

“We don't get a lot here. There's a few, but not an extraordinary amount of accidents,” Esperance Fire Chief Tim Deffer said.

State Police said failure to yield the right of way was a contributing factor in the crash.
