A frequented area in the Town of Wallkill could someday see a lot more traffic. As YNN's Elaina Athans tells us, there's a proposal to build another shopping center.

WALLKILL, N.Y. -- More shopping options could be coming to the Town of Wallkill. A plan to build the Fisher Commons, a 200,000 square foot retail development.

The person pushing forward the proposal wants the highlight of the property to be a rooftop restaurant where diners could catch a glimpse of the Manhattan skyline.

"It's good to have growth here in the Town of Wallkill and I don’t know if that’s happening everywhere in Orange County, but we’re proud to have it here,” said Town of Wallkill Supervisor Dan Depew.

The complex would be wedged between Route 211 and Tower Drive, right behind Hannaford Supermarket.

Commercial realtor Brenden Burke says area itself draws in plenty of people.

He adds, " The market appears to be saturated and there are vacancies popping up here in and there is some of the other plazas.”

Besides worries on bringing another shopping center to the Wallkill area, there’s also traffic congestion concerns. A number of studies would have to be done on this proposal, including the impact the road infrastructure.

"There are some residences in the area and also traffic mitigation is going to be a major issue," said Depew.

The preliminary design shows shoppers would enter and exit the property via Route 211. The road is owned by the State Department of Transportation.

"With 211 involved, the State DOT is going have comments that they’re going to want to make on that project," said Depew.

The Town Planning Board is now reviewing proposal. The studies could take a year or more.

The town says there will be a chance for residents to voice their opinion on the project, before the green light is given and ground is ever broken.
