ALBANY, N.Y. -- The U.S. Attorney's office announced the indictment of the Ulster County man accused of planting mercury at Albany Medical Center. Martin Kimber, 59, is charged with two counts of violating the chemical weapons statute and one count of violating the consumer product tampering statute.

Investigators say Kimber received care at Albany Med in December 2010. They say he wrote a letter complaining about having to pay for his treatment.

According to indictment, officials with the hospital responded, saying the bills were appropriate. Investigators say in March of this year, Kimber was seen on hospital surveillance video spreading mercury at various areas of the hospital cafeteria. They also believe he is responsible for three other incidents where mercury was found around the hospital last year. Investigators say toll records show Kimber traveled to Albany on the days the mercury was found.

While executing a warrant, law enforcement officers said they found canisters of mercury in Kimber's home and car. They also said they found 21 guns and literature supporting domestic terrorism in his home.

If convicted, Kimber faces up to life in prison and fines.
