MASSACHUSETTS --The Bay State marks eight years since becoming the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling took effect on May 17th, 2004.

The group Mass-Equality says more than 18,000 same-sex couples have been married in the state. This figure includes couples from out-of-state, who can marry in Massachusetts, though it's not recognized in most states.

The anniversary means a little more this time, following President Obama's historic endorsement of same-sex marriage last week.
