MONTGOMERY, N.Y. -- An SUV traveling west bound on Route 17K in Montgomery burst into flames after veering into the center lane and hitting a U.S. mail truck.
The accident happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Route 17K and Bailey Road, killing the SUV’s driver. Police say the truck’s driver was able to escape his vehicle uninjured.
“Preliminarily, it appears to be an accident and the driver of the truck doesn’t appear to be at fault,” said Town of Montgomery Police Chief Arnold Amthor.
Town of Montgomery police say the intensity of the fire made it difficult to get to and identify the victim. They were assisted at the scene by State Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department
“The initial units that responded to the scene attempted to put the fire out but the front ends were totally engulfed, so it's very intense and there's really not much you can do at that scene at that time,” Amthor said.
No other injuries were reported and police don’t expect to file any criminal charges
