NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- The State Bridge Authority awarded the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge repair project to a construction company from Long Island City.

Last month, Governor Cuomo announced more than $200 million in funding for repairs for 238 miles of road and 23 bridges across the Hudson Valley as part of the New York Works Program. A total of $106 million of that funding will go toward the Newburgh Beacon Bridge.

The project includes removal of lead based paint from the girder span, deck trusses, beam span and floor systems of the bridge. It will then be repainted.

The Bridge Authority says repainting a bridge is a cost effective and proven method of protecting against deterioration.

The project was originally scheduled to begin in 2015, but the Bridge Authority says it was accelerated and can begin as soon as possible.
