TROY, N.Y. -- A veteran and purple heart recipient is honored for his service. First Sergeant Patrick Abrams was inducted into the New York State senate veterans’ hall of fame on Saturday.

Abrams was presented the award Saturday at the veterans of Lansingburgh Club. Abrams served in the Vietnam War and operation Iraqi freedom. He earned two purple hearts during his 30 year military career, and spent 26 years as an officer in Cohoes police department. He retired in 2003. He was born and raised in troy, and has a degree in criminal science and public management.

Senator Roy Mcdonald nominated Abrams for the honor. He said Abrams is the perfect hometown hero.

“What a great American success story, and we almost lost him. Is there anybody, any better illustration, of the American men and women, that we have in the military, than Patrick Abrams. Right here from the City of Troy,” said Mcdonald.

The New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from New York who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life.
