CATSKILLS, N.Y. -- Poor cell phone coverage in the Catskills may have contributed to the death of an elderly New York City couple.
Investigators said last week Arthur, 88 and Madeleine Morris, 89, made nine calls for help after their vehicle slid off an embankment not far from their vacation home in Andes in Delaware County.
Arthur died when he was crushed by the car. His wife walked with a cane to a neighbor's empty home and huddled on the porch. The couple apparently tried to call a relative, a neighbor and 911 several times but the calls were unsuccessful.
Their family decided to share the story to highlight the possible risks of poor cell phone coverage. Apparently the husband and wife only carried a cell phone for emergencies.
