LANESBOROUGH, Mass. -- Perhaps one of your fondest childhood memories is going for a carousel ride. If so, a group in Berkshire County wants to bring back those happy feelings by building a carousel from scratch.

Berkshire Carousel is a group of over 200 volunteers working to build the carousel. They've been at work since 2008, carving and painting wooden horses. The project is slated for completion next year.

In all, the carousel will feature three chariots and 33 horses, each paying homage to wooden horse carvers of the past.

Organizers say they attract a wide range of volunteers, many of whom simply curious to try something new.

"When people come in here every day they're happy. We’re making things we know children are going to absolutely love. That’s children of all ages and we're really creating a legacy for the community," said Maria Caccaviello, director of Berkshire Carousel.

Berkshire Carousel is holding a fundraiser next month, auctioning off sketches of horses drawn by iconic horse carvers. It will be held at the Berkshire Mall on June 22. A preview will be from 6 to 8 p.m. and the auction starts at 8 p.m.
