SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY. -- An archeological professor from Skidmore College made a pretty big discovery after 10 years of digging in Guatemala.

The National Geographic Society says Heather Hurst, along with the team, found a structure that looked like a work space for a town scribe in the Maya ruins. The structure had figure paintings on its walls and ceiling, along with hundreds of painted and scrawled numbers relating to the Mayan calendar.

Hurst says it was a very unique discovery.

"Something you would only find it books, but books are not preserved for the ancient Maya. It is very, very rare. We only know of a couple of them, so this is like finding a book that is painted on a wall. It gives us a new insight in how they were calculating time, what they were observing and how they are figuring out cycles of time into the future," Hurst said.

Hurst also painted reproductions of the mural, which will be included in an article in the May 11th issues of the journal "Science."
