A black bear gave residents in Schenectady a little bit of excitement around dinner time after it climbed up and got stuck in a tree. Erin Vannella has more.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A black bear has been tranquilized after sitting in a tree for roughly two hours in the Capital Region.

The bear was not injured after falling from the tree in Schenectady's Stockade district. He had been shot with tranquilizers as a safety measure.

The furry visitor never presented any real threat to the crowds of excited people watching.

Police had gotten a call that the bear was in the neighborhood Thursday morning.

"First thing you gotta do is do your perimeter and make sure people know they are not in a proximity where they can get hurt. Number one responsibility. Number two, put people in position that, if need be, can destroy the animal safely. So those are the first things we need to get done," said Schenectady Police Commissioner Wayne Bennett.

The bear was brought a regional headquarters to be monitored overnight. If he's deemed okay in the morning, he'll be taken to an undisclosed location to be released.
