ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Livingston Avenue Bridge has carried trains between Albany and Rensselaer for over a century. But Senator Charles Schumer also wants to see people walk across the bridge, too.

Schumer is pushing CSX, the State Department of Transportation and Amtrak to include a pedestrian friendly walkway as they begin to develop plans for the future of the span. In fact, he's getting $2 million in federal funds to study how best to put a walking path on any new bridge. He says giving people a way to walk between the Albany and Rensselaer waterfronts could be an economic boom for both sides of the river.

"So to link these two beautiful, historic waterfronts with a network of walking and biking trails has the potential to do for Albany, Rensselaer what the Walkway over the Hudson has done for Poughkeepsie, Highland. Brought in millions of tourists," Schumer said.

“Both sides of the river are working, so very hard on trails that would connect our respective communities. This would be a lynch pin to connect the two sides together. As we see the economic development on both sides of the river, this will also be an important aspect for people trying to travel back and forth," Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino said.

There's no concrete plans to replace the bridge right now, but it's part of the state's high speed rail plan.
